the skin is packed more loosely and altered more readily in women than in men. Sunlight breaks down collagen and elastin fibers causing sagging, dryness and loss of elasticity, especially in the cheeks and around the lips. Sunlight accounts for 80 percent of what we call aging. It produces fine lines, brown spots, deeper expression lines and a leathery skin texture. It plays on skin colore and breaks down elastin and collagen, the critical building blocks of skin structure. The best way to keep wrinkles at bay is to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen and stay in the shade. Misuse of sunscreens can actually promote cancer. Many people will actually stay in the sun longer than they might normally because of their belief in the ability of their sunscreen to protect them. While, in fact, they may be protected from UVB rays but not from the more damaging UVA rays. The public is right to worry about chemical sunscreens and the potential for skin irritation as well as chemical burns. Sunscreens with high SPF's have a strong potential for causing irritation.
