What setting powder is best for dark skin?
When it comes to setting powder for dark skin, you want it to have a sheer, matte finish. You don’t want something that’s going to create buildup on top of your flawlessly applied makeup, or worse, create flashback.
At Colorescience, we have three setting powders for dark skin that fit the criteria:
- Sunforgettable® Brush-on Sunscreen SPF 30: This mineral powder sunscreen can be used as setting powder for medium-dark skin tones because it comes in five different shades. While this powder is tinted, it’s made to blend seamlessly with your skin or the makeup you’ve already applied for sheer, natural-looking coverage
- Sunforgettable ® Total Protection ™ Brush-On Shield SPF 50: For a higher level SPF, try our Sunforgettable ® Total Protection ™ Brush-On Shield SPF 50. The SPF 50 version of our mineral powder is available in four shades including tan and deep, which makes it a great setting powder for brown skin or black skin.
- Sunforgettable ® Total Protection ™ Sheer Matte SPF 30 Sunscreen Brush: This brush-on setting powder for dark skin tones is completely sheer, for an invisible, matte finish. If you don’t even want the light tint that our other brush-on sunscreens provide, this translucent formula is the most versatile setting powder for dark skin.
Our natural setting powders are specially formulated to be safe for sensitive, blemish-prone, and oily skin. Shop our selection of setting powder for black skin or brown skin, so you can protect your skin while perfecting your finished makeup look.
In addition to catering to dark skin tones, our mineral powders contain broad-spectrum SPF and 100% mineral ingredients. They’re also non-comedogenic, hypoallergenic, suitable for sensitive skin, and protect against environmental factors like pollution and infrared radiation.
Is setting powder and translucent powder the same?
What is often referred to as a “translucent powder” is a finishing powder designed to create a smooth, flawless finish. Usually, you’ll apply a translucent finishing powder once you’ve finished your foundation, blush, contour, and highlight (or whatever your personal makeup routine entails). When you apply the finishing powder, it will help blend everything out and make your pores look smaller.
On the other hand, a setting powder is primarily designed to help your makeup last throughout the day. Basically, a setting powder is the same as setting spray, just in powder form. Usually, you will apply your setting powder after everything else, including your translucent finishing powder.
While these powders are usually two different products, Colorescience’s UV protection powder can do both and it protects your skin from sun damage. Thanks to our mineral powder’s ability to absorb excess sebum (oil in the skin), it can help your makeup last. This is because the oil in our skin plays a major role in breaking down our makeup, making it slowly come off throughout the day.
All three of our setting powders for dark skin can be worn with or without makeup, while still absorbing oil, mattifying the skin, and reducing shine, for a nearly flawless complexion.
What causes setting powder to flashback?
The dreaded flashback. Nothing ruins the perfect photo like an unwanted white cast. But what causes it? Flashback occurs when the flash of a camera reflects off the skin (and the makeup products you’ve applied) and back into the camera lens. Flashback is caused by certain ingredients commonly found in setting powders. Specifically, flashback has been attributed to either high quantities of silica (usually the case for HD powders) or SPF-related ingredients. However, not all SPF products are created equal.
Yes, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide have been tied to flashback. But before you swear off setting powders with SPF, it’s important to note that having the right blend of ingredients plays a big role in preventing flashback from occurring.
Too often, setting powder for medium-dark skin tones isn’t formulated with this issue in mind. However, our mineral powder has been carefully formulated to provide the best possible finish, making it a good option for those looking for a setting powder for dark skin with no flashback.

- Remove the cap and push the sleeve down that covers the brush.
- Turn the applicator upside down (with the top against a hard surface) and tap several times (two to five taps should be sufficient). This will help loosen the mineral powder. To see if powder is flowing, flick the bristles.
- Sweep the brush over your face in small circular motions.
