PA RATING
PA is an important rating that can help guide your selection when it comes to skin care products. The PA rating system measures the level of protection specifically from UVA rays, which are known to cause skin aging and pigment darkening in the skin. It measures the amount of time a product would protect your skin from darkening. To learn more about the PA rating system and what makes PA++++ the highest rated level of protection, read our “What is PA++++? Guide”.
COMBINATION SKIN
Colorescience® UV protectors are great for those with combination skin which is typically characterized by dry, flaking skin on the cheeks, while excessive oil and shine appears on other areas of the face. To best understand combination skin and how to treat it read our What is Combination Skin guide.
MINERAL SUNSCREEN FAQ
What is mineral sunscreen, and how does it work?
Mineral sunscreen, also known as physical sunscreen, uses natural minerals such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to create a physical barrier on the skin. Our mineral sunscreens also feature our patented Enviroscreen® Technology to defend your skin from daily environmental aggressors, like pollution and blue (HEV) light.
Unlike chemical sunscreens, which work by absorbing UV rays and converting them into heat, mineral sunscreens sit on top of the skin and act as a shield, reflecting rays away from your skin.
Can mineral sunscreen be used on all skin types?
Yes, Colorescience® all-mineral-based sunscreens are formulated to be safe for all skin types, including oily, dry, and combination skin. Mineral sunscreen provides broad-spectrum protection without causing irritation or clogging pores, making it an excellent sunscreen for sensitive skin.
With our commitment to creating safe sunscreen options, you can trust that our products are gentle yet effective for daily use.
Does mineral sunscreen leave a white cast on the skin?
Colorescience® all-mineral sunscreen formulas are designed to be lightweight and blend seamlessly into the skin without leaving a white cast. With our thoughtfully developed formulas, including tinted and untinted options, you can enjoy the benefits of broad-spectrum sun protection without the unwanted residue often associated with mineral sunscreens.
How do I choose the right SPF in a mineral sunscreen?
It’s important to choose a mineral-based sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 – which blocks 97% of UV rays – or higher, to ensure adequate protection against harmful UV rays. Many of our sunscreens are SPF 50, which blocks 98% of UV rays.
When looking for a mineral sunscreen, you want one that offers broad-spectrum protection – guarding against both UVA and UVB rays – to prevent sunburn, premature aging, and skin damage.
Can mineral sunscreen be used under makeup?
Yes, mineral sunscreen can absolutely be used under your makeup, providing a base layer for full protection. Some of our mineral-based sunscreens can be worn as a substitute for your makeup, like Sunforgettable® Total Protection® Face Shield Flex SPF 50, which offers both sun protection and a flawless demi-matte finish. You can also pair a sheer sunscreen with a matte mineral foundation.
Throughout the day, you’ll want to reapply sunscreen at least every two hours for continuous protection. We recommend using a Sunforgettable® Total Protection® Brush-On Shield SPF 50 for easy powder reapplication on-the-go that won’t disrupt your look.
Are there waterproof mineral sunscreens?
Yes, Colorescience® all-mineral sunscreens are sweat- and water-resistant. Water-resistant sunscreen means that it’s been formulated to maintain its effectiveness for a certain period of time while exposed to water or sweat.
Our sweat- and water-resistant all-mineral sunscreens provide reliable protection for up to 80 minutes, ensuring that your skin remains protected from the sun's harmful rays, even in wet conditions.
