FAQs
WHAT IS VEGAN SUNSCREEN?
Vegan sunscreen means that the SPF product formula contains zero animal products or animal by-products (fats, collagen, and other parts of animals that are not typically consumed).
If you didn’t think you had to worry about how your skincare and cosmetics might impact your vegan lifestyle, think again. We’re sorry to say that many big-name brands use many cheap fillers that are indeed derived from animals.
Fear not—when you shop the Colorescience line of all-natural sunscreen, you can trust that all of our SPF products are certified vegan sunscreen. Our vegan mineral sunscreen is available in a variety of formulas and application methods so you can find the one that works best for you—whether that’s a slight tint, warm summery glow, or good old-fashioned non-tinted sunscreen. Shop our selection of protective, gentle, and animal-product-free sunscreens:
- SUNFORGETTABLE® BRUSH-ON SUNSCREEN SPF 30: Available in five shades (fair, medium, tan, deep, and medium shimmer), this mineral-powder formula is easy to apply on-the-go with a brush applicator.

Whether you’re looking for a vegan face sunscreen or one for your body (or better yet both), we have you covered with all-natural, mineral-based solutions.
IS ALL VEGAN SUNSCREEN ORGANIC & ECO-FRIENDLY?
Unfortunately not. Many companies will spare no expense in the pursuit of profit—even the lives of animals. If you want to avoid placing animal-based ingredients on your body, watch out for these common culprits on the labels of all your beauty products:
- Lanolin – Animal fat extracted from sheep’s wool
- Beeswax – Sourced from honeycomb and often used as an emollient
- Collagen – Protein found in animal tissue
- Elastin – Protein found in the walls of animal arteries
- Chitin – Exoskeletons of crustaceans used for color
Navigating vegan sunblock* options can be tricky, especially if you’re new to veganism, but you have the opportunity to protest animal cruelty with every informed purchase you make. It’s important to always read the ingredients on both food labels and cosmetic labels to uphold vegan values.
In addition to looking for specific vegan ingredients, keep in mind that non-toxic sunscreen should never contain chemicals such as oxybenzone that disrupt our bodily functioning when absorbed into the skin. These chemicals also harm wildlife when they make their way into our environment and oceans.
And don’t forget, when shopping for a vegan face sunscreen, you also want to make sure that it will offer adequate protection. Look for SPF 30 or higher on the label to ensure that you’ll get the most essential benefit of sunblock*.
At Colorescience, we know healthy skin and are obsessively overprotective about preventing skin damage. We’ll help you stick to your commitment to being vegan and protect your skin while doing it. With our vegan, hypoallergenic sunscreen products, you can buy with confidence and spend less time reading labels.
ARE ALL CRUELTY-FREE SUNSCREENS VEGAN?
No, cruelty-free sunscreens are not always vegan. This is because there’s a major difference between what it means to be a cruelty-free product and a vegan product. Cruelty-free products (including all of the components or ingredients) have not been tested on animals, while vegan products do not contain animal products or by-products.
If you’re concerned about the ethical treatment of animals, cruelty-free skincare and cosmetics are likely also a priority to you and should be on your checklist of must-haves when shopping for a new sunscreen. However, while it’s a good thing for sunscreen to be cruelty-free, which ties into vegan lifestyle values, you cannot automatically assume that it’s also a vegan sunscreen.
One important thing to note is that “vegan” skincare products are not closely regulated. While there are penalties for mislabeling products, skincare and cosmetics do not usually require pre-market approval (unless there are color additives). This means some products can slip under the radar and use labels that are misleading, claiming that they are vegan or cruelty-free, even if they are not.
Before you make your purchase, look for “vegan” and “cruelty-free” on the label, but make sure you also carefully check the ingredients list. If any ingredient is unfamiliar to you, look it up with a quick search online. Fortunately, there are more and more people devoted to veganism, so finding an answer to your query should be fairly easy.
It might seem like a challenge to find if you’re simply looking at your run-of-the-mill store brands, but there are great options out there that don’t require you to compromise your values, including Colorescience. We’re proud to be able to say that all of our vegan mineral sunscreens are also cruelty-free.
HOW IS VEGAN SUNSCREEN MADE?
The key to a truly vegan sunscreen is in the ingredients list. Our vegan sunscreens are made using the purest, safest ingredients because we believe you should never have to be fearful of the products you apply on your skin. Formulated with minerals such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, Colorescience all-natural sunscreen allows you to defend against the sun without the use of harsh chemicals or animal ingredients.
For many individuals, especially those who suffer from acne and other difficult-to-manage skin conditions, the main hesitation for purchasing vegan SPF for your face is that it might not be as effective as other sunscreens or may cause breakouts. While deviating from the traditional ingredients list can be scary, Colorescience vegan face sunscreen has been carefully formulated to be both a powerful protector against sun damage and gentle on acne-prone and sensitive skin. In fact, our sunscreens are non-comedogenic and non-toxic, meaning they exclude ingredients that are known to clog pores and irritate skin.
Remaining committed to veganism shouldn’t mean settling for sub-par sun protection. Instead, shop with Colorescience and enjoy the peace of mind that you’re sticking to your values and using high-quality, safe sunscreen that will help protect your skin in the short term and allow you to reap the benefits of less sun damage in the long term.
