DO PEOPLE WITH DARK SKIN NEED SUNSCREEN?
Yes. While having darker skin does provide you with a bit more protection from the sun due to the higher levels of melanin, that doesn’t mean you can forgo sunscreen when heading outdoors. Even though you might not see a noticeable sunburn when you spend time outside without wearing sunscreen, there may be other signs that your skin is under duress including heat emanating from the skin or tenderness to touch.

And while those with dark brown or black skin can spend up to 60 minutes in the sun without burning, it’s not advised to regularly go out in the sun without protection. Other factors like where you live—specifically the current UV index and radiation levels—can also impact how much the sun affects your skin and how long it can withstand the sun, no matter your skin tone.
Additionally, while individuals with darker skin tones are at a lower risk of skin cancer, that doesn’t mean they face no risk. So yes, even if you have dark skin you need to wear sunscreen. Fortunately, there are more options than ever when it comes to quality sunscreen for black skin.

HOW MUCH SPF DO PEOPLE WITH DARK SKIN NEED?
There is a wide range of dark skin tones, meaning that there’s not necessarily a one-size-fits-all SPF solution. However, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends SPF 30 or higher for anyone who is going to expose their skin to the sun.
In addition to wearing dark skin sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, you should also make sure to reapply every two hours. And if you’re swimming or sweating, you’ll need to reapply even more frequently, about every 80 minutes.
