WHAT IS AN FSA?

An FSA, or Flexible Spending Account, is a pre-taxed account you can use for either out-of-pocket medical expenses or certain dependent-care expenses. Since your FSA is funded with pre-taxed dollars, you can expect to save about 30 percent on your overall medical expenses throughout the year.

While you must initially pay for these expenses up-front, you can then request a reimbursement through your FSA. To request reimbursement for a medical cost, you will need to then submit proof of purchase and statement that the cost has not been covered by your insurance. You can set up an FSA through your healthcare provider and designate how much of your earnings you want put into your FSA, up to $2,650 per year, per employer.

The money you put into the FSA must be used within the year (or within the grace period offered by your employer), otherwise you lose out on the money you put aside. That’s why it’s important to know what expenses fall within the approved list for your FSA—you may be surprised to find that the list includes most sunscreen and other skincare products.

Is Sunscreen FSA-Eligible?

Fortunately, sunscreen falls under the umbrella of FSA-covered medical expenses because it is considered a non-prescription over-the-counter medication. Sunscreen has a huge impact on decreasing your chance of sunburn, signs of aging, and skin cancer, and you can now buy sunscreen with your FSA. Since the FDA considers sunscreen a must-have item for your medicine cabinet, and integral to overall health, it is included in the list of approved expenses—including Colorescience FSA sunscreen.

Our customers’ safety is our top priority. With our diverse selection of sun protection, you can find high-quality FSA sunscreen for the whole family. With our mineral sunscreen for kids, you can all have fun in the sun without worrying about sunburns and permanent skin damage. We also offer pregnancy safe face sunscreen for expecting mothers who want sun protection that’s free of harsh chemicals.

Don’t forget to submit your proof of purchase to get your reimbursement for FSA sunscreen purchases!

WHAT SUNSCREEN TYPES ARE FSA-ELIGIBLE?

Before you pick up just any sun protection, you should be aware that there are restrictions on which products will be covered by your FSA. In order to be considered an FSA-eligible sunscreen, it must meet certain requirements.

  1. The primary purpose of the product must be to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun. That said, that doesn’t mean your suncare can’t have other uses too, like concealing pigmentation or helping to minimize fine line and wrinkles.

  2. It must be considered a broad-spectrum sunscreen. Broad-spectrum means that the sunscreen protects against both UV-A and UV-B rays. Not only are our sunscreens broad-spectrum, but many of them also protect against environmental factors (like pollution and blue light) thanks to our EnviroScreen® Technology.

  3. The sunscreen must be SPF-15 or higher. However, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends that you use a sunscreen with SPF-30 or higher for adequate protection.

You’ll find that Colorescience has a diverse range of FSA-eligible sunscreen products.

DOES COLORESCIENCE OFFER PHYSICAL FSA ELIGIBLE SUNSCREEN?

Yes. Colorescience offers physical sunscreens that do not contain harmful ingredients like their chemical sunscreen counterparts. Also known as physical blockers, these sunscreen options contain natural active minerals that work to deflect the sun’s damaging UV rays.

The advantage of using a physical sunscreen is that your skin is not subject to chemical absorption, protecting you from the damaging effects of harsh ingredients. If you have sensitive skin, chemical sunscreen is apt to cause irritation, including skin discoloration, burning, blistering, itching, and hormone disruption.

Our physical sunscreens are crafted with natural, safe ingredients designed to keep pores clean and skin protected. We are committed to providing our customers with safe options, including paraben-free sunscreen and sunscreen without oxybenzone (one of the most common chemicals in sunscreen).  In addition to using chemical-free formulas and guarding your skin against UVA and UVB rays, many of our products also protect your skin from pollution, blue (HEV) light, and infrared radiation.

We’ve formulated our sunscreens with family-friendly ingredients, without sacrificing the powerful protection you need to stay healthy, so you can feel good about using our products.

WHAT OTHER SKINCARE PRODUCTS ARE FSA-ELIGIBLE?

Since skincare is also a critical component of your health, you may also be able to purchase your cleanser, pigmentation-correctors, and other skincare products with your FSA. You could be surprised by how many of our must-have skincare and daily makeup items can be purchased using your FSA.

For example, our SUNFORGETTABLE® TOTAL PROTECTION™ COLOR BALM SPF 50, that protects and hydrates while also adding a subtle tint, is FSA-eligible. The same applies to our TINT DU SOLEIL® SPF 30 WHIPPED FOUNDATION, which adds a touch of color and glow while guarding your skin against the sun.

To make the most of the money you’ve put away in your FSA, always make sure to check whether a product qualifies as FSA-eligible skincare before making a purchase.

WHY SHOULD I USE AN FSA TO PURCHASE SKINCARE PRODUCTS?

You should use your FSA to purchase skincare products (and any medical-related products whenever possible) because you want to make good use of the money you’ve set aside. As we mentioned, if you don’t spend the money you’ve put into your FSA, it goes unused, which means that money is forfeited.

Now that you know more about buying sunscreen with Flexible Savings Accounts, put your hard-earned money to good use by protecting you and your family with Colorescience’s chemical-free products that guard against sun damage and pollution—all while helping your skin look it’s best.
